the Orbis factor was composed at the Northwestern University Computer Music Studio in 1985 using the composer's stochastic algorithm based on the voice-leading in the kyrie of the chant mass "orbis factor".

v1.1 was realized with a Karplus-Strong synthesis algorithm. v1.2 - v1,4 were realized through midi control of a Yamaha DX-7 digital FM synthesizer
